I've been a Plus member for years and love it. The 3D flyover maps really help visualizing the elevation gain before a trip. I noticed they launched a more expensive 'Peak' plan recently, but honestly, the Plus plan has everything a normal hiker needs. The route planning on desktop is easier than mobile.

I hike solo often, and the offline maps feature is non-negotiable for me. Downloading the map ahead of time has saved me from getting lost multiple times when cell service vanished. The 'wrong turn' alerts are surprisingly accurate. For $36 a year, it's the cheapest insurance you can buy for hiking.

It's great for *finding* a hike because of the reviews and photos. But for actual navigation, I find apps like Gaia GPS or CalTopo better. AllTrails sometimes has inaccurate user-uploaded routes that take you off the official trail. I pay for it mostly for the discovery aspect, not the mapping tech.
