Years ago, Snagit was essential. But now, the built-in screenshot tools on both macOS and Windows have gotten so much better (with basic annotation). For my simple needs, it's hard to justify paying for Snagit when the free tools do 80% of what I need. If you need advanced features like scrolling capture, it's still the best, but for basic captures, it's overkill.

Snagit is a fantastic piece of software. However, having to pay a significant upgrade fee for every major version feels a bit dated in the age of subscriptions. The core functionality hasn't changed that much in years, so I often skip a version or two before upgrading. But the tool itself is top-notch.

Snagit is so much more than a screenshot tool. The editor is what makes it indispensable. Adding arrows, callouts, and step-by-step numbers to a screenshot takes seconds. It's essential for creating documentation, reporting bugs, and giving feedback. The scrolling window capture is also flawless. I would pay double for it.
