Grafana is the best tool for building beautiful monitoring dashboards. However, for deep, investigative root cause analysis, I find tools like Datadog or Honeycomb to be more intuitive. Jumping between metrics, logs, and traces in Grafana doesn't feel as seamless. But for visualization, it's unbeatable.

The platform is fantastic, but you have to be very careful about your data ingestion. A misconfigured agent can send way more data than you expect and lead to a surprise bill. Their cost estimator is helpful, but you need to actively monitor your usage, especially with high-cardinality logs or metrics.

Grafana Cloud's free tier is incredibly generous. We were able to get Prometheus metrics, Loki logs, and Tempo traces all feeding into beautiful dashboards without managing any infrastructure ourselves. For a small team, it's the perfect way to get enterprise-grade observability for free.
