You can't run a large engineering organization without a tool like Jira. The ability to create custom workflows, automate ticket transitions, and generate detailed reports on velocity and cycle time is critical for managing work at scale. It's a complex tool for a complex problem, and it does its job well.

Jira feels like it was designed for project managers, not for the people actually doing the work. Creating and updating tickets is a chore, with dozens of fields to fill out. I spend more time managing my Jira board than I do writing code. Simpler tools like Linear or Shortcut are much more developer-friendly.

Jira is the standard for a reason. It can be configured to match any workflow, and the integration with the rest of the Atlassian suite is tight. However, it's slow. Clicking through tickets, loading backlogs, and changing settings all have a noticeable lag. It's a powerful beast, but a sluggish one.
