I use the free CDN and it's mostly great. However, I tried the 'Kits' feature on Pro, which allows for dynamic icon updates, and I noticed a slight performance hit on page load. It's not huge, but for a performance-obsessed developer, it's noticeable. I went back to self-hosting the SVGs.

While Font Awesome is a classic, I'm finding myself using other libraries like Lucide or Tabler Icons more often. They are open-source, lighter, and have a more modern, thin-line aesthetic. Font Awesome's solid style feels a bit dated for some of my projects. It's still a solid choice, but no longer the only one.

Font Awesome has been my go-to for years. The library is massive, the icons are stylistically consistent, and it's incredibly easy to implement. The Pro version with its duotone icons and larger set is well worth the money for any serious developer. Using the SVG + JS method makes them incredibly sharp and easy to customize with CSS.
