I open Credit Karma weekly to check for new accounts or inquiries. It’s fantastic for spotting fraud early and tracking general trends. But the scores are based on VantageScore, not FICO, so they don’t always match what lenders use. I treat it as a ballpark, not gospel.

The way Credit Karma labels things like ‘99% on-time payments’ as ‘Good’ is misleading. One missed payment can wreck a FICO score even if they still label you as green. New users might get a false sense of security. It’s okay as a data source, but take the labels and advice with a grain of salt.

It’s convenient to have my reports and scores in one app. However, almost every screen nudges me to open a new credit card or loan. It’s clear they make money on referrals. As long as you understand that and don’t apply for everything they recommend, it’s a fine free tool.
